This W008 drop hazard sign flags a change of level you can fall from: a platform edge, an open floor opening, an inspection pit. The symbol has been listed on the ISO 7010 register under code W008 since 1 May 2011. The yellow triangle with a black border comes with 100 or 200 mm sides. Ten materials cover guard rails, bay bollards, pit walls and bay office glazing.

Drop hazard signage: the key points

  • W008 code from the ISO register: the standardised pictogram identifies a fall from a change of level.
  • Ten materials, two sizes: 100 or 200 mm side to match the reading distance.
  • Screen printing resists oils and solvents: the marking survives the loading-bay environment.
  • Photoluminescent version available: visible after a power cut.
  • Loading bay, floor opening, mezzanine: a signal suited to each change of level.

Where the W008 sign belongs on a logistics site

The W008 does not flag an uneven floor, it flags a void: there is a measurable fall height behind the mounting point. One question settles each position, is there a sharp change of level with nothing stopping it.

  • Loading bay edge with no folding guard rail: door open, trailer gone, around 1.20 m of void remains.
  • Floor opening and goods lift shaft: the sign goes on the gate post.
  • Inspection pit in a workshop: the triangle supports the covering deck.
  • Mezzanine and storage platform: the service aisle edge is often the only unprotected point.
  • Excavation, chamber or open channel: any temporary opening calls for the same signal.

Standardised geometry: what the triangle has to respect

ISO 3864-1 sets the shape and colours of safety signals: for warning, an equilateral triangle with a yellow ground, a black border and a black symbol. ISO 7010 then assigns one precise symbol to each hazard. The register lists a fall from a change of level under code W008, labelled Warning; Drop (fall), registered on 1 May 2011 and still active.

Since 2013, new signage installed in Europe has to use ISO 7010 pictograms. In France, the order of 4 November 1993 places on the employer the duty to signal hazards that remain once protection is in place. This triangle belongs to the yellow warning and hazard signs family. Article R4323-59 of the labour code puts the guard rail first; the W008 sign comes afterwards, warning of the residual risk. The marking plan is built with the other items in building signage.

W008, W007 and slippery surface: three hazards to keep apart

three yellow hazard signs aligned on a mezzanine guard rail

The costliest confusion involves two neighbouring codes. W008 marks a change of level: you fall from a height, the fall is vertical. The tripping hazard sign carries code W007, a floor-level obstacle: you trip, the fall is horizontal. The slippery surface sign covers reduced grip, with no change of level.

The handling vehicles sign completes the set on the vehicle side. Where a harness is required near the edge, the blue mandatory fall protection sign takes over: the yellow warning and the blue instruction are fitted together. If no standardised symbol describes the hazard, the customised sign allows a bespoke signal, and the signage accessories cover mounting without drilling.

Frequently asked questions about the drop hazard sign

Which ISO 7010 code covers the risk of falling from a height?

The symbol is listed as W008 on the ISO 7010 register, labelled Warning; Drop (fall). It shows a figure tipping over an edge above a void, on a yellow triangle with a black border. It was registered on 1 May 2011 and remains active. Quoting the code on an order prevents the tripping pictogram being supplied instead.

How does it differ from the tripping hazard sign?

The difference is fall height. Tripping falls under code W007, a floor-level obstacle: a step, a threshold, a cable, an uneven floor. W008 assumes a sharp void behind the point signalled, a bay edge or a floor opening. Neither replaces the other and both often sit a few metres apart on the same site.

Does the sign replace a guard rail?

No. Article R4323-59 of the French labour code puts collective protection first: a rigid guard rail between 1 m and 1.10 m, with a toe board, handrail and intermediate rail, or a device of equivalent safety. Signage addresses the residual risk, where the void cannot be closed permanently.

Which size suits a loading bay edge?

The 200 mm is the only relevant size at a bay edge: it reads on approach, from the yard as well as from inside the building. The 100 mm stays useful for close mounting, on a floor opening gate or a pit wall. Both sizes coexist without difficulty on one site.

What should be used in an area with no emergency lighting?

Photoluminescent 1 mm in 200 mm, or photoluminescent vinyl in 100 mm. The pigment charges from ambient light and stays visible after a power cut, precisely when the risk of falling from a height is highest.
