This W014 forklift warning sign flags powered vehicle movement across an area shared with people on foot. The symbol has been listed on the ISO 7010 register under code W014 since 1 May 2011. Where the W014 signal belongs in a logistics flow

The W014 signal goes wherever a powered vehicle path crosses a pedestrian path. It has to be read before entry into the conflict zone, not at the moment of the crossing. An aisle exit, an airlock, a loading bay: the rule holds in each case, you signal upstream of the meeting point.

  • → Aisle exit onto a pedestrian area: the triangle goes on the pedestrian side, at eye level.
  • → Warehouse gate and airlock: it warns the visitor entering on foot into a vehicle area.
  • → Loading bay: repeated reversing creates the most common blind spot.

Yellow ground and black border: the shape rule

ISO 3864-1 fixes the geometry of the warning signal: equilateral triangle, yellow ground, black border, black symbol. ISO 7010 then assigns the symbol. The ISO register lists the forklift truck under code W014, registered on 1 May 2011 and still active, with the intended behaviour of avoiding collision with a moving industrial vehicle.

Since 2013, ISO 7010 pictograms have been the only ones accepted for new signage in Europe. In France, the order of 4 November 1993 requires the employer to signal risks that remain once collective protection is in place. This sign belongs to the yellow warning and hazard signs family. Signage replaces neither the physical separation of flows nor driver training: the traffic plan is built with the other items in building signage.

Telling W014 apart from other logistics area signals

Three yellow signals often share the same few square metres, and misattribution is common. W014 designates a moving industrial vehicle, forklift truck or ride-on pallet truck. The construction equipment sign designates earthmoving plant, not a warehouse vehicle. The suspended loads sign covers a load above a walkway.

The uneven surface fall risk sign deals with an unguarded bay edge: it complements W014 without duplicating it. Where no standard symbol matches, the customised sign allows a bespoke signal, as with the rest of the general and specific instruction signs. Quoting the code in a specification removes any ambiguity when ordering.

Is the sign enough to make an aisle safe?

No. Signage comes last, after risk removal and physical separation of flows. A W014 sign works alongside floor marking, a protective barrier or a junction mirror. The site risk assessment determines which combination applies and where each signal goes.

Should a text panel be added under the pictogram?

The ISO register recommends a supplementary text panel where exposed staff have received neither written instructions nor training on the signal. On a site with external visitors on foot, added wording clearly improves immediate understanding. The customised sign allows that version to be composed.

Which size suits a warehouse gate?

The 200 mm is the only relevant size on a gate: it stays legible from an approach distance of several metres, on foot or behind the wheel. The 100 mm is for close mounting, on a racking upright or a room door. Both sizes can coexist on one site.

Can it be moved when storage campaigns change?

Magnetic vinyl 0.8 mm answers that need: it grips any ferrous substrate, lifts off without residue and repositions when the picking area moves. It comes in 100 and 200 mm. On a non-ferrous substrate, white vinyl 0.25 mm remains the easiest option to re-apply.
