American Tag: What Is It?
Often referred to as a hang tag or simply a card tag, the American tag is a rigid, non-adhesive information medium. It is characterized by a perforation at the top, usually reinforced with an eyelet. This specific design allows it to be securely attached to a product or piece of equipment using a fastening tie.
Among the most iconic models, the Manila tag stands out with its natural buff color and ultra-strong fiber. It is the preferred solution for combining an authentic "vintage" look with exceptional tear resistance during intensive handling.
Zero glue, zero residue: it protects your delicate products while remaining extremely easy to use. Its thick card resists frequent handling without tearing. It is the ideal all-purpose solution—both neat for retail displays and durable for workshop environments.
What Is an American Tag Used For?
American tags serve multiple purposes, all essential to the smooth operation of your value chain. In-store, they inform customers about a product’s characteristics. They display price, size, composition, and origin, making purchasing decisions easier.
Internally, they are true logistics tools. For example, they are excellent inventory management tags, helping organize warehouses in a clear and intuitive way. They are also very useful for streamlining inventory processes through the use of distinct color codes or easily readable sequential numbering.
American tags are also widely used as identification tags during maintenance or quality control processes. Attached to a machine, they instantly indicate an ongoing issue. Fixed to a batch of parts, they validate a production stage in a clear, fast, and unambiguous way for all operators.
Types of American Tags Available at SBE Direct
Because every industry has its own constraints, we offer a wide selection of models. At SBE Direct, our goal is to provide the most suitable technical solution for your environment.
Here is a summary table to help you choose:
| Tag Type | Preferred Materials | Recommended Fastening | Key Uses and Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard / Retail | Light to medium-weight card | Textile string, plastic fastener | Classic shelf labeling, product information, brand enhancement |
| Industrial | Heavy card or plastic | Wire-attached American tags | Attachment to mechanical parts, high resistance to friction and dirt |
| Reinforced | Thick tear-resistant card | Eyelet-reinforced tags with ties | Maximum attachment security, prevents tearing under tension |
| Signage / Sorting | Through-dyed card | Wire, elastic, or cable tie | Instant visual identification (e.g., a red tag to indicate a defective product) |
Which Hang Tag Type Best Fits Your Needs?
Choosing the right labeling solution depends directly on your use case. To select the most suitable product from our catalog, it is important to ask the right questions:
What type of product needs to be labeled?
A garment requires a cotton or nylon string to avoid damaging the fabric. On the other hand, a heavy metal part or a bag of debris requires an ultra-strong metal attachment.
What is the sales or storage environment?
In retail, aesthetics and card quality are often key. For outdoor use or in humid warehouses, opt for laminated materials that are resistant to water and UV exposure.
What level of customization is required?
Do you need to write information by hand, print a simple traceability barcode, or display full branding with visuals? Consider your communication and operational needs.
What are the security constraints?
If you are dealing with shrinkage risks, opt for tamper-proof fasteners or formats compatible with your anti-theft systems.
Benefits of Custom Tags for Optimal Labeling
From a technical perspective, customizing your American tags allows you to integrate highly precise traceability elements. Adding QR codes, serialized numbers, or unique barcodes significantly reduces manual entry errors. Your supply chain becomes more reliable and efficient.
Beyond logistics, when you choose custom American tags, they become a communication tool—a true ambassador of your brand. Tailored labeling enhances your professionalism and strengthens your brand image at first glance.
Finally, they are a strategic complement to other identification formats. When combined with custom stickers applied to outer packaging, you create a consistent visual identity and a double layer of traceability across all your shipments.

FAQ
American Tag or Adhesive Label: What’s the Difference?
The main difference lies in the fastening method. An American tag is attached using a physical tie (wire, string, ribbon, or metal) and contains no adhesive at all, unlike a label. It is therefore ideal for rough surfaces, textiles, or whenever you want to avoid any residue on your product.
What Size Is an American Tag?
Dimensions and shapes vary widely to suit every use. They range from very small formats (e.g., 30 × 60 mm for jewelry or small accessories) to large industrial sizes (e.g., 80 × 160 mm). At SBE Direct, we offer many standard sizes as well as custom die-cut options.
How Do You Attach an American Tag?
Attachment is very simple: just pass a tie through the perforated corner—the eyelet—of the tag, then secure it around the product or its packaging. You can use wire, string, elastic, or a tagging gun to quickly insert a plastic fastener.
Is It Compatible with Anti-Theft Systems?
Yes, American tags are fully compatible with product security systems. They can be used alongside an anti-theft tag whose pin passes through the perforation. For optimal in-store security, we strongly recommend using models with metal eyelets to prevent easy tearing.
