An automatic lock changes the nature of the check. On a screw sleeve, the state of the connector can be read. On a twist lock there is nothing to read: the sleeve has always returned to the closed position. The check becomes an action: operate it, release it, and confirm the sleeve returns to the locked position on its own and the gate no longer opens.

That action is not optional. Dust, paint overspray, ice, deformation after an impact: none visibly stops the sleeve completing its travel.
