The W001 general warning sign marks a hazard for which ISO 7010 registers no dedicated pictogram. Its yellow triangle with a black border reads as an instruction to pay attention, while the exact nature of the risk is spelled out on a text panel fitted below the sign. It covers the transient situations of an industrial or commercial site: works in progress, maintenance, temporary storage, site specific rules. Two sizes and ten materials let you fit it right next to the hazard, then move it once the hazard is gone.

Where the W001 stands in for a pictogram that does not exist

The generic triangle covers the risks the registered set does not name. These are nearly always situations no one planned for, and they still have to be signposted the same day.

The yellow triangle stays intact, the text goes on a panel

The W001 is entered in the ISO 7010 register as the general warning sign. Its geometry follows ISO 3864-1: equilateral triangle, yellow ground covering at least half the surface, black border and black pictogram. The side comes in 100 mm and 200 mm, in line with the rest of the warning and hazard signs.

The registered symbol is never altered: no wording is set inside the triangle. The detail of the risk goes on a separate panel fitted below the sign, following the hazard severity panel logic set out in ISO 3864-2. In France, health and safety signage at work is governed by the order of 4 November 1993. A W001 fitted on its own says pay attention without saying to what, and is often ordered in pairs with a second sign from the same building signage range.

The W001 steps aside as soon as a precise pictogram exists

The generic triangle is a default signal, not a universal one. As soon as a registered symbol describes the risk, that symbol takes precedence. A distribution board calls for the electrical hazard sign. A sharp edge calls for the sharp object sign. A wet floor calls for the slippery surface sign.

Where the risk calls for an obligation rather than a warning, the yellow triangle is the wrong carrier: the mandatory signs with text carry the blue pictogram with its text built in. The W001 keeps its role on the risks the standard does not name, alongside the rest of the industrial signage, and the customised sign builds a bespoke signal where text alone is not enough.

Frequently asked questions about the general warning sign

Can text be printed inside the yellow triangle?

No. The symbol registered in ISO 7010 is never altered: no wording is set inside the triangle. The message goes on a separate panel fitted below the sign. That rule is why the W001 is almost always ordered together with a second sign.

Which size to choose between 100 and 200 mm?

The 100 mm goes right next to the hazard, on a machine, a guard or a door, and reads from under two metres. The 200 mm covers reading at a distance along a traffic aisle. Worth noting: plexiglass, dibond and photoluminescent 1 mm exist in 200 mm only.

Is a W001 on its own enough to comply?

No, and that is the most common misreading. The triangle warns without naming the hazard. The text panel is part of the signage arrangement, not a cosmetic option. The French order of 4 November 1993 governs health and safety signage at work.

Which material for a hazard that will disappear?

Magnetic vinyl 0.8 mm on a ferrous surface, white vinyl 0.25 mm otherwise. Both lift off without a mark and refit elsewhere, which saves buying a new sign each time the area concerned moves.

Can a pictogram that does not exist be manufactured?

The bespoke sign lets you adapt size and artwork, text included. One caveat: an unregistered symbol never replaces an existing ISO symbol, it only covers a case the standard has not addressed.
