This W022 sharp element sign warns of a cutting edge, a blade or a point that can cause a laceration. The pictogram uses symbol W022 from the ISO 7010 catalogue, the only reference accepted for new safety signage since 2013. The yellow triangle with black border comes with 100 or 200 mm sides. Ten materials cover mounting on partitions, machinery, glazing or metal.

Sharp element signage: the key points

  • W022 pictogram to ISO 7010: the symbol designates a cut or puncture risk without ambiguity.
  • Two sizes, ten materials: 100 or 200 mm side to match the reading distance.
  • Screen print resists oils, solvents: the marking holds up in machining areas.
  • Photoluminescent version available: residual legibility after a lighting failure.
  • Indoor and outdoor mounting: partition, machinery, glazing or metal substrate.

What the W022 pictogram warns about at a workstation

Signal W022 warns that a pointed or cutting element can cause a laceration or a puncture wound. It is fitted as close to the hazard as possible, at eye level, not at the building entrance. Operators must be able to read it without stepping into the hazardous area.

  • Sharp edges on sheet metal: stacks of plates and bars expose hands during handling.
  • Blades and cutting tools: saws, shears and knives stay sharp with the machine off.
  • Glazing edges and glass shards: a sign visible from the operator's side.
  • Protruding reinforcement bars: a puncture risk at leg height across formwork.
  • Projecting racking uprights: an upright into a traffic aisle warrants a triangle.

Yellow triangle and black border: what the standard requires

Shape and colour are not a design decision. ISO 3864-1 sets the equilateral triangle, the yellow background and the black border for every warning sign, while ISO 7010 assigns a symbol to each hazard. Since 2013, new safety signage must use these standardised pictograms.

In France, the order of 4 November 1993 requires employers to signpost residual risks, those that collective protection does not remove. A missing guard, an accessible blade or an edge left unfinished all fall within that scope. The other yellow warning and hazard signs follow the same coding. The 100 mm side suits a close-range signal, the 200 mm once reading distance exceeds a few metres: the same size logic applies across the building signage range.

Telling W022 apart from other mechanical hazard signals

three yellow hazard signs aligned on a plant room partition

Several yellow pictograms cover neighbouring mechanical risks without being interchangeable. W022 addresses the pointed or cutting element, so laceration and puncture. Entrapment between two cylinders belongs to the counter rotating rollers sign. A slippery floor belongs to the slippery surface sign. Live contact belongs to the electrical hazard sign.

Picking the right symbol shapes the legal weight of the signage as much as its legibility. Where no standardised symbol matches the observed risk, the customised sign builds a bespoke signal without leaving the colour code, as does the wider general and specific instruction signs range. Fixing method follows the material: the instructions and signage accessories cover screws and adhesives, and industrial signage extends to floor marking.

Frequently asked questions about the sharp element sign

Which ISO 7010 pictogram covers a sharp element?

The symbol is referenced W022, titled Warning; Sharp element in the ISO 7010 registry. It shows a point directed at a hand, on a yellow triangle with a black border. This code identifies the signal without ambiguity in a specification or a prevention plan. It rules out confusion with the other mechanical hazard symbols in the W series.

Is this sign mandatory in a workshop?

The French order of 4 November 1993 requires residual risks to be signposted once collective protection is in place. If a blade, a sharp edge or a point stays within operator reach, signage becomes mandatory. It never replaces a guard or a mechanical protection. The workstation risk assessment determines the exact position.

Should I choose 100 or 200 mm?

The 100 mm size is fitted at the hazard itself, on a machine, a cover or an access door, and reads at under two metres. The 200 mm size covers reading at a distance, in a traffic aisle or from an operating position. Both sizes can coexist. Acrylic, aluminium composite and 1 mm photoluminescent are available in 200 mm only.

Which material holds up outdoors?

3 mm aluminium composite is the most stable substrate for lasting outdoor mounting, on a loading bay, a fence or a storage yard. 2 mm PVC suits a sheltered outdoor position. In every case the screen printing resists oils and solvents. Three aluminium composite finishes are offered: white, gold and brushed.

Can the sign go on a removable guard?

0.8 mm magnetic vinyl answers that case: it holds on a ferrous substrate and lifts off without residue during an intervention. It repositions in the same place afterwards. This version comes in both 100 and 200 mm. On an aluminium or composite cover, 0.25 mm white vinyl is the better option.
