A drinking water point that isn't signed isn't a drinking water point - it's a tap nobody is sure about. This 200 x 60 mm blue plate settles the question at a glance, at the door of a welfare room, above a fountain, or along a workshop corridor. Nine materials share the same format and the same screen-printed pictogram: adhesive vinyl for a smooth wall, PVC for a screw fixing, aluminium composite for outdoor use, magnetic vinyl for metal supports you want to be able to rearrange. One-year warranty, sold individually, from €34.00 excl. VAT.

Drinking water at work: the duty first, the plate second

Article R4225-2 of the French Labour Code requires the employer to make potable, cool water available to workers and to determine the location of distribution points close to workstations. A duty of provision, and a duty of location. The sign settles the second one: it makes the location identifiable.

The requirement has tightened. Decree no. 2025-482 of 27 May 2025, applicable from 1 July 2025, created a chapter on preventing risks linked to intense heat episodes: water kept cool throughout the working day, in sufficient quantity, with a floor of three litres per person per day on sites without running water. An unmarked water point, in a warehouse in August, is a prevention measure operators cannot find.

Three situations justify the plate on their own: the welfare room, where the drinking point must be told apart from the wash basin; the workshop, where several water supplies coexist and not all are potable; the temporary site, where the layout keeps moving - which is where the magnetic version earns its place.

Blue rectangle or green ISO 7010: two different objects

Let's be blunt: the standardised drinking water pictogram is not blue. In NF EN ISO 7010, drinking water carries the code E015 - a green square from the safe condition series, showing a tap above a glass. Blue, in ISO 7010 and ISO 3864, is reserved for round mandatory action signs of the M series. A blue rectangle belongs to neither series.

This product is therefore an identification plate, not a standardised safety sign. The distinction has mattered since 1 January 2014, the date from which newly installed safety pictograms in France must comply with NF EN ISO 7010. To identify a facility within a room-marking scheme, the blue banner is the right tool and blends better into consistent building signage.

The opposite message, though, is standardised. Non-potable water does have a standardised sign, P005, the red crossed circle of the prohibition series. On a site with several water supplies, it is the non-potable water sign that carries the critical information, and this blue plate that carries the service information. For escape routes and first aid, the green series remains the only reference.

Nine materials, one format: which one for which wall

The material choice governs the fixing method and the service life. 0.25 mm white vinyl is an adhesive: it needs a smooth, clean, non-porous surface and comes off with a heat gun. 1 mm PVC bonds or screws onto almost any flat surface; 2 mm PVC stays rigid on a two-point fixing and will not buckle on an uneven wall.

0.8 mm magnetic vinyl is the only repositionable version, on ferrous doors, cabinets or machines. Photoluminescent vinyl takes over once the lighting goes off, provided it has been charged by sufficient ambient light beforehand. The three 3 mm aluminium composites - white, gold, brushed - are plastic-cored panels between two aluminium sheets: rigid, unaffected by humidity, outdoor rated. 4 mm acrylic plays the same aesthetic card in translucent form, on standoffs.

This plate belongs to a full family of blue mandatory and information signs available in the same nine materials: shower sign, toilets sign, kitchen sign, housekeeping room sign, or a directional arrow to guide people to the water point from a corridor. Grey room-marking signs complete the set on changing rooms and service areas. And if the wording you need is not in the catalogue, the custom sign uses the same materials and the same screen-printing process.

FAQ - drinking water sign

Is a drinking water sign compulsory?

What is compulsory is the provision of potable, cool water and the designation of its location close to workstations, under article R4225-2 of the French Labour Code. The text does not prescribe a specific plate. Visual marking is the simplest way to make that location identifiable, and it has become decisive since decree no. 2025-482 of 27 May 2025, which requires water kept cool throughout the working day and a minimum of three litres per person per day on sites without running water.

Why is this sign blue when the standardised drinking water pictogram is green?

Because it plays a different role. The green E015 square in NF EN ISO 7010 is a safe condition sign. This blue rectangular plate is a room-identification element, consistent with building signage. If your need falls under regulatory safety signage, choose the standardised E015 format; if you are identifying a facility within a marking scheme, the blue banner is appropriate and matches the other service plates visually.

Which material should I choose for outdoor mounting?

The three 3 mm aluminium composites. Their sandwich structure - plastic core between two aluminium sheets - does not warp with humidity and copes with temperature swings. 2 mm PVC also holds up outdoors under shelter. Avoid 0.25 mm adhesive vinyl in exposed positions, and magnetic vinyl, whose grip depends on how clean the metal surface stays.

Can the sign be removed without damaging the wall?

Only the 0.8 mm magnetic vinyl version comes off and goes back on without a trace, on ferrous surfaces. Adhesive versions leave a glue residue that needs a solvent. PVC, aluminium composite and acrylic mounted with screws leave the holes behind. On a site whose layout evolves, magnetic is the only truly reversible choice.

Does the sign work in the dark?

Only in photoluminescent vinyl. That material releases light it has previously absorbed: it therefore requires sufficient ambient lighting upstream, and its luminance decays over time after the lights go out. It supplements escape route marking, it does not replace it.
