Article R4227-37 of the French Labour Code requires a fire safety instruction to be displayed very conspicuously in every room where more than five people work. This fire safety instruction sign carries that instruction on a rigid or self-adhesive 200 x 300 mm support, screen-printed so the text will not fade. Nine materials cover every situation: offices, boiler rooms, covered car parks, corridors with no emergency lighting. One format, one reference to manage, compliance that holds over time.

What the fire safety instruction sign carries

→ It carries the instruction required by Article R4227-37 for every room with more than five occupants.
→ The single 200 x 300 mm format matches regulatory display positions, at eye level near exits.
→ Screen printing lays the ink in a thick layer: the text stays legible after years of exposure.
→ The photoluminescent versions remain readable after a power cut.
→ The 3 mm aluminium Dibond versions withstand outdoor use, damp and UV.
→ The self-adhesive and magnetic vinyls fit without drilling, on glazed partitions, doors or metal cabinets.
→ The wording is adaptable on request (internal numbers and designated people).
→ Standards: NF X 08-003, ISO 7010, ISO 6790.

Why a fire safety instruction sign is mandatory in every room

The obligation does not apply to the establishment as a whole but room by room. Article R4227-37 requires a fire safety instruction to be displayed "very conspicuously" in every room where more than five people work, and in every room where flammable materials are stored or handled with no headcount threshold for the latter. That is why a fire safety instruction sign is ordered in batches, and why a single format keeps a display estate manageable. Browse our full range of general and specific instruction signs within the building signage catalogue.

"Very conspicuously" is the wording that causes the most trouble during inspections: a sign fitted behind an open door or in an unlit corridor does not meet the condition. The 200 x 300 mm format was chosen for that reason.

For a site's complete mandatory display, it pairs with the labour legislation instruction sign and the mandatory display kit for businesses.

Choosing the material of your fire safety instruction sign, room by room

Nine materials are available in the same format, and the choice comes down to three things: how the room is lit, how exposed it is, and how the sign can be fixed. In corridors with no emergency lighting, in stairwells or basements, the 1 mm photoluminescent version and the photoluminescent vinyl are the only ones that stay usable after a power cut. These supports extend the logic of our photoluminescent evacuation signs.

In plant rooms, boiler rooms and covered car parks, 3 mm aluminium Dibond holds up against damp and temperature swings: see the boiler room instruction sign and the car park instruction sign. In offices, 2 mm PVC and 4 mm Plexiglas give a permanent finish; where drilling is out of the question, white and magnetic vinyl go up without a mark. Matching fixings are listed under instruction and signage accessories.

What the instruction displayed on the sign must state

The support is only worth what it carries. Article R4227-38 lists seven required items: the firefighting and rescue equipment, the people responsible for operating it, the people responsible for directing evacuation, the measures relating to people with disabilities including the safe waiting areas , the means of raising the alarm, the people responsible for calling the fire brigade, and the address and number of the first-call emergency service.

Three of those items are specific to your site: designated people, means of raising the alarm, internal numbers. That is why this sign can be customised on request, which avoids handwritten additions that carry no regulatory value.

The equipment and alarm items are relayed by the fire extinguisher instruction sign and the emergency call instruction sign. Colours follow NF X 08-003, ISO 7010 and ISO 6790.

FAQ

In which rooms is this fire safety instruction sign mandatory?

In every room where more than five people work, within establishments covered by Article R4227-34, and in every room where flammable materials are stored or handled — with no headcount threshold for the latter. The obligation is assessed room by room, not establishment-wide.

Which material should I choose for a room with no emergency lighting?

The 1 mm photoluminescent version or the photoluminescent vinyl. They are the only two variants that stay legible after a power cut. They work alongside the fire control signs fitted along the same route.

Can we add our own emergency numbers and designated people?

Yes, the wording is customisable on request. It is in fact advisable: three of the seven items required by Article R4227-38 are specific to your site. A handwritten addition to a standard sign carries no regulatory value.

How does this differ from the white background version?

The choice is about use, not regulatory content. This sign is built for compliance display in all rooms, including plant rooms and unlit spaces. The white background version suits bright office spaces where visual integration comes first.

How can the sign be fitted without drilling?

By choosing 0.25 mm white self-adhesive vinyl for smooth surfaces, or 0.8 mm magnetic vinyl on metal supports. For rigid materials, mounting systems are listed under instruction and signage accessories.
