A metal hose clamp looks simple to remove, right up to the moment the screw head slips, the band refuses to give, or worse, the fastener turns out to be a security seal you are not allowed to force. 1) Worm-drive hose clamp (Serflex)

The worm-drive hose clamp is the most widespread model, made up of a slotted steel band and a worm screw. The screw head engages the slots to tighten or loosen the band. You will find it on coolant hoses, garden hoses, flexible plumbing connections and a large share of industrial fittings.

2) Self-tensioning spring clamp (Mubea)

A spring steel ring with two protruding tabs. The pressure applied stays constant and automatically compensates for thermal expansion of the hose. Very common in automotive applications on fuel hoses and low-pressure coolant connections.

3) Crimped ear clamp (Oetiker)

The crimped ear clamp is a band closed mechanically by permanently crimping the ear. This fastener is designed for a single fitting. To open it, you have to cut the ear. It is found on CV joint boots, injectors and industrial valves.

4) Clic-R clamp

The Clic-R clamp is a plastic-metal ring fitted with a locking tab. It is fitted and released by hand, with no tool needed to open it. Used for quick connectors, wiring harnesses and certain industrial sheathing.

5) Double-wire clamp

The double-wire clamp consists of two parallel steel wires tightened by a screw or a loop. A long-standing design, very common on domestic appliances (washing machines, dishwashers) and older compressed-air hoses.

6) Stainless steel ball-lock clamp

The stainless steel ball-lock clamp takes the form of a thin stainless steel cable connected to a plate with a one-way ball mechanism. This model is very often a security seal, not a simple mechanical fastener. Each method below assumes you have identified the clamp using the chart above. If in doubt, stop: a wrong move on a pressurised hose or on a seal under regulatory control costs far more than one extra check.

Loosening a worm-drive hose clamp (Serflex)

  1. Clean the screw head to clear any deposit from the slots.
  2. Choose your tool: a 7 or 8 mm socket spanner first (better grip than a screwdriver), otherwise a flat screwdriver that fits the slot properly.
  3. Turn the screw anticlockwise.
  4. Once the band is released, slide the clamp along the hose or fitting.
  5. If the screw is seized, apply a penetrating spray, wait 5 to 10 minutes, then try again.

In the workshop, always keep a set of new fasteners to hand. A Serflex clamp removed repeatedly ends up with worn slots and a screw head that loses its grip.

Compressing a self-tensioning spring clamp

  1. Locate the two protruding tabs, designed to be squeezed.
  2. Use self-tensioning clamp pliers (known as offset pliers) for awkward access, or slip-joint pliers as a fallback.
  3. Squeeze the two tabs firmly together: the ring opens slightly under the pressure applied.
  4. Hold the pressure and slide the clamp out of its groove, along the hose.
  5. On recent engines, plan for offset cable pliers to reach fasteners buried in the engine bay.

Cutting a crimped ear clamp (irreversible)

  1. Place the jaw of side cutters or pincers on the crimped ear.
  2. Cut in one clean movement: the band tension releases instantly.
  3. Spread the band apart with a small flat screwdriver.
  4. Remove the fastener. Essential: this fastener cannot be reused, so have a new one of equivalent size ready for reassembly.

Unclipping a Clic-R clamp

  1. Locate the locking tab on the clamp head.
  2. Press firmly on the tab with your thumb or fine flat-nose pliers.
  3. At the same time, spread the closing loop apart.
  4. Remove the clamp. Most Clic-R clamps refit as they are with no loss of hold.

Opening a double-wire clamp

  1. Identify the closing system: screw, loop or spring depending on the model.
  2. On a screw model, unscrew the head anticlockwise.
  3. On a loop model, slide a flat screwdriver under the tab to lift it, then spread the wires apart.
  4. Remove the clamp by sliding it sideways.

Seized, rusted or hard-to-reach clamp: the solutions

A seized clamp is the most frequent cause of a blocked field job. Three causes dominate: oxidation, limescale deposits and vulcanisation of the rubber onto the fitting. The rule is never to force before treatment, or you will break the screw head or pierce the hose.

  • Penetrating spray: spray the screw and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat if needed. WD-40, PTFE release spray and graphited penetrating oils give the best results.
  • Gentle heat: a heat gun applied briefly expands the metal and breaks the oxidation bonds. Watch out for nearby plastics and rubber.
  • Controlled tapping: lightly tapping the spanner with a hammer helps break the seizure. Never a heavy blow.
  • Full cut: if nothing works, cut through the band with an angle grinder or side cutters, protecting the hose with a metal plate in between.
  • Bonded rubber: if the clamp is off but the hose is still stuck, slide a pick tool or a small flat screwdriver between the rubber and the pipe. Spray silicone to help it release. Never pull by force.

For awkward access (engine bay, technical compartment), offset cable clamp pliers are the reference tool. They let you work on a tab 30 or 40 cm from your hand. According to a 2024 CETIM report on industrial maintenance, more than 60 % of workshop hose damage comes from using the wrong tool on a seized clamp, not from the clamp itself.

Can a metal clamp be reopened without cutting it and reused?

It depends on the type. Serflex worm-drive clamps, Mubea spring clamps and Clic-R clamps are designed to be loosened and retightened several times, provided the slotted band is not deformed and the screw head keeps its grip. Oetiker crimped ear clamps and stainless steel ball-lock clamps are single-use by design: any attempt to open them destroys them.

In industrial practice the rule is simple: if the fastener is crimped or permanently closed, replace it every time. The cost of a new fastener bears no comparison with a leak in service, especially on a pressurised connection.

Your clamp will not open? It may be a sealing clamp

If you are dealing with a thin stainless steel cable connected to a small plastic or numbered metal plate, stop any attempt to open it. You are very probably looking at a sealing clamp, also called a metal ball-lock seal, used to make a regulated checkpoint tamper-evident.

According to the French Directorate General of Customs and Excise, forcing a seal fitted to a meter or a regulated terminal constitutes fraud and falls under criminal law (article 314-1 on fraudulent removal, plus specific articles of the energy code for electricity and gas meters).

Three typical cases:

  • Electricity, gas or water meter: the seal guarantees that no tampering has taken place between two readings. Only an authorised agent from the operator (Enedis, GRDF, the water authority) may remove it legally. Safety: precautions before you start

A hose clamp rarely holds anything other than a fluid, a gas or a pressurised sleeve. Three risks dominate everyday jobs:

  • Hot fluids: never open a hot engine cooling circuit. Wait until it has cooled completely, or you risk a 90 °C spray.
  • Residual pressure: fuel and pneumatic circuits stay pressurised even with the engine off. Always wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves before opening a connection.
  • Sharp edges: clamps cut with pliers leave sharp edges. Wrap the band in a cloth before removal, or fold it back with flat pliers.

For any work on sealed equipment (meter, terminal, container), contact the operator before you touch anything. Proof of integrity rests on the visible condition of the seal, and breaking it without a record makes you liable.
