The Peli 1470 is the waterproof case for flat equipment: 9.8 cm of usable height across a 39.9 x 27.2 cm footprint. A shell sealed by an O-ring, tested to 30 minutes' immersion at 1 metre, usable from -40 °C to +99 °C. Two versions: pre-cut foam fitted, or an empty case to kit out yourself. 1.94 kg empty, guaranteed for life excluding the seal.

Key features of the Peli 1470 waterproof case

  • Usable volume 39.88 x 27.18 x 9.83 cm, split between 6.10 cm in the base and 3.73 cm in the lid: the height sits either side of the seal, not all on one side.
  • External footprint 42.88 x 33.60 x 11.35 cm: the flat profile stands upright in a boot or on a shelf without wasting space.
  • Automatic pressure equalisation valve: the case reopens without effort after air freight or a change in altitude.
  • O-ring seal in a grooved lid: stated watertightness of 30 minutes' immersion under 1 metre.
  • Pull & Press latches and stainless steel hardware.
  • Operating range -40 °C to +98.9 °C, MIL-C-4150J certification.
  • 1.94 kg empty, 2.50 kg with foam: compatible with hand-carrying over distance.
  • Two 9 mm padlock eyes for locking or sealing, eyes not reinforced, unlike cases with reinforced eyelets.
  • Front label holder: contents or holder identified without opening.
  • Lifetime guarantee on the case, excluding the seal. Rubber over-moulded handle, black.

What the 43 x 11 x 34 format actually carries

The figure that matters is not the external footprint but the usable volume: 39.88 x 27.18 x 9.83 cm. And that 9.83 cm of height does not come in one block, it splits between 6.10 cm in the base and 3.73 cm in the lid.

In practice, the Peli 1470 waterproof case takes one flat item with a large footprint, or two thin layers either side of the seal: a measurement board, a rugged terminal, a dismounted optic, a probe set, A4 documents and boards. What it will not take is a cubic item, for that the full range sits in our waterproof hard cases and across the wider transport cases universe.

Peli 1470 waterproof case without foam, 39.9 x 27.2 x 9.8 cm usable

The format is chosen by comparison, not in isolation. Below it, the 30 x 10 x 21 cm case covers the handheld instrument, and the Microcase range drops a further step down. Above it, the 50 x 12 x 35 cm waterproof laptop case gains 10 cm in length for a full workstation, and the 49 x 18 x 33 cm case nearly doubles the usable height. The 1470 occupies a precise slot between the two: the footprint of a large format, the thickness of a small one.

Watertightness, impact, temperature: what the build guarantees

Three components create the seal, and they work together. The O-ring seated in the lid groove closes the shell; the Pull & Press latches hold the clamping pressure; the automatic equalisation valve releases the pressure differential that would otherwise jam the case shut after a flight or a change in altitude. That third component is the one nobody weighs up at purchase and everybody notices the day a competing case refuses to open. Stated performance: 30 minutes' immersion under 1 metre.

The rest is mechanical and thermal endurance: stainless steel hardware, a -40 °C to +98.9 °C range, MIL-C-4150J certification, and a lifetime guarantee on the case, the watertight seal, a wear part, is excluded. To understand what those standards actually cover and which of them are contractually enforceable, our article on case certifications separates military standards from ingress protection ratings and NATO agreements.

Pre-cut foam or empty case: choosing the version and securing the closure

Peli 1470 waterproof case open with pick-and-pluck foam

The Peli 1470 comes in two versions at the same format. With pre-cut foam (€517.00 excl. VAT per unit): the pick-and-pluck foam tears out cube by cube to the shape of the equipment, no tools needed. Without foam (€478.00 excl.

VAT per unit): the case is empty, to be fitted with bespoke packing, dividers, or a partition system, the principle behind the Trekpak partition case, reconfigurable each time the equipment changes. Both versions are tiered at 5 and 10 pieces.

Then there is the closure. The two 9 mm eyes accept a security padlock or a single-use padlock seal, the latter delivering the tamper evidence a padlock does not provide. Those eyes are, however, not reinforced: if the case has to withstand a pull-off attempt, the decision moves to our safe protective cases with reinforced eyelets. And where the load exceeds what is carried at arm's length, the cases with wheels carry the same build on a rolling chassis. So the choice comes down to three questions, in this order: how much usable volume, how much packing, how much proof at the closure.

FAQ

Is the Peli 1470 flat enough for a laptop?

Usable height is 9.83 cm, split into 6.10 cm in the base and 3.73 cm in the lid, across a 39.88 x 27.18 cm footprint. A 15-inch laptop fits that footprint. If the workstation travels with a power supply, a dock and cabling, the sheet to look at is the 50 x 12 x 35 cm waterproof laptop case, which adds 10 cm of usable length.

What happens when the case travels in an aircraft hold?

The automatic equalisation valve compensates the pressure differential during climb and descent, which prevents the case jamming shut. That is the function separating a waterproof case from a merely closed box: without it, an airtight shell distorts or seizes.

With or without foam: which one?

With foam if the equipment is a single item of stable shape, the pick-and-pluck foam tears out by hand, cube by cube. Without foam if the contents change regularly, or if you prefer bespoke packing or a reconfigurable partition system. The gap is €39.00 excl. VAT per unit, and the empty version stays cheaper at every quantity break.

Can the case be padlocked?

Yes, two 9 mm eyes take a padlock or a single-use padlock seal. Those eyelets are not reinforced: they deter and they evidence opening, they do not resist a tooled pull-off. Where the case is left unattended, the reinforced-eyelet 35 x 15 x 29 cm case is the sounder choice.

What does the lifetime guarantee cover?

The shell itself, excluding the watertight seal, which is treated as a replaceable wear part. The guarantee covers manufacturing and material defects in normal use; it does not extend to the contents, nor to a case whose seal has been left damaged in service.
